calibrateBUMPS 2.0: Week 32-34

Writer: CaitCait

Welcome to the summary of the second half of summer travels! I'm writing this from my living room in Hong Kong as we've safely returned as of yesterday but I'll attempt to quickly summarise the last 2 weeks!

The entire full weeks saw Noah and I make the transcontinental trip from New York to Vancouver where we spent 2 weeks slowing down, relaxing, and just spending our days outside whilst getting in lots of quality family time.

The first week I was quite run down and sick. I had to finish a course of antibiotics for conjunctivitis, I had a cough and runny nose and was generally just tired. It had been a very busy 2 weeks and I think my body and mind knew it could afford a week of just nothing so that's exactly what I gave it. I took a few walks and did some gentle yoga but the step count plummeted from 25,000 to 6-7,000.

The focus of the 2 weeks was just getting Noah to spend some time with her great grandmother and we spent 5 days on the island her other great grandmother lived on for decades. I took her to the forest as often as I could. We went to water parks, we picked (sour) blackberries, we picked blueberries, we fed goats, we pet sheep, we saw the backside of a wild bear. Basically, we did all the things we can't do in Hong Kong and it was glorious watching her thrive in an environment I find so relaxing, grounding, and peaceful. A stark contrast to life in Hong Kong!

Training

Super brief here. Minimal steps (only maybe 50% of the days were 10,000+ days), yoga every other day, this took a big back seat. Energy levels were non-existent, as was motivation. My body was busy healing and rejuvenating.

Life in General

Definitely starting to feel the second stage of third trimester kick in.

  • The lungs aren't expanding as easily as they used to which means I'm acutely aware of ANY incline.

  • Energy levels are starting to drop.

  • Appetite is dropping as stomach space becomes more and more constricted.

  • Sleep is king and I could do it for the whole day

On the plus side - no major discomforts yet! Long distance travel and long periods of sitting do need to be offset with a longer period of walking or some yoga though. I'm glad the summer of travel is over and we won't be on a plane any time soon! I did find plane travel to be much more comfortable than I was anticipating (and nothing gets you through airport security/immigration lines faster than being pregnant and travelling with a toddler!) but the last flight back to HK was definitely not as restful as I usually find flights to be.

In other news, this child is VERY strange in that he moves ALL the time - even if I'm moving. I'm used to sitting down and feeling lots of movement which is what Noah used to do. But walking around with a squirming, somersaulting womb-side child writhing around inside you is certainly an....interesting experience. I'm not sure uncomfortable is an apt word but it's certainly not overly pleasant. At one point while I was on a ferry from one island to another one he rolled/squirmed and my sciatic nerve seized for a good 5 min. I had to sit down because I lost the ability to contract my right glute and therefore couldn't walk. This was something that happened a few times with Noah - again not super pleasant.

Other than that - not much else to report! Now that the countdown clock is starting to really tick away the checklist of "things to do" is slowly building. Luckily we have all the stuff we need and we know where it's all going to go. Now it's just a question of washing it and putting things like clothes and burp cloths and swaddles in drawers. Then at some point Jack will be tasked with crib reassembly.

Next week we have a growth check scan to see how the last month will shape up. We're getting there!

Speak to you next week! In the mean time stay cool, hydrated, and happy!
